WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Weston man has been given life without parole for killing a woman in the spring of 2021.
David Morris was in court on Tuesday for a plea and sentencing hearing. The 54-year-old, who had previously pled not guilty to the charges, entered a guilty plea for first-degree intentional homicide. In exchange, five additional counts were dismissed but read into the record. That includes a count of battery by prisoners, which had been cross-referenced with the homicide case.
Morris fatally stabbed Renee Hindes inside a Weston apartment on April 23rd, 2021. Authorities arrived on the scene early that morning on reports of a woman needing help. Authorities say when they got there they were confronted by Morris who was armed. Police then fired at Morris, he was taken to the hospital and was last said to be in stable condition.
He was arrested on the charges a few months later. Morris had been held at the Dodge Correctional Insititute while awaiting trial.
Court records show Tuesday’s proceedings lasted less than an hour. Four people did address the court with victim impact statements.
In addition to the life sentence, Morris has been ordered to pay $5,000 to the crime victim compensation fund and pay court costs.
