WAUSAU WI, (WSAU) – As cold weather continues to ravage the badger state, many residents are looking for ways to help keep their homes safe and warm this winter. Matt Cullen of WPS says there are important things for customers to keep an eye out for and offers some helpful reminders and tips to get through these cold days ahead.
Cullen says one key to keeping your home safe in the winter is to install carbon monoxide detectors, because the gas is undetectable without one. “One of the most important things that our customers can do to help keep their home safe is make sure they have carbon monoxide detectors installed on every level of their home.”
He also mentioned that trying to heat your home with an oven is inefficient and potentially dangerous because it could lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide in your home.
Cullen went on to say that there are a few different ways to ensure your home is being heated in the most efficient way possible. He says, “They can open up their blinds, curtains, and drapes when it’s sunny outside to allow mother nature to naturally heat up their home, so they don’t have to go turn up their thermostat to keep the home at a comfortable temperature.”
Another helpful tip Cullin offered was turning the thermostat down 7 to 10 degrees while you’re asleep or away from home for an extended period of time; that way the heat isn’t wasted when no one is around to notice it.
