WISCONSIN (WTAQ-WRN) — The FDA is allowing non-dairy beverages to be labeled “milk,” and Senator Tammy Baldwin and bipartisan co-sponsors have reintroduced the Dairy Pride Act.
Baldwin says Wisconsin dairy farmers work hard to produce a healthy quality product that conforms to FDA standards.
“These plant based beverages can use the word ‘milk’ with no responsibilities attached.” said Baldwin.
She says the FDA decision to allow plant based beverages to use the word milk is unfair to dairy farmers who’ve faced a ton of challenges.
“Whether it’s extreme weather or trade wars and tariffs, or high cost of feed and not having control over the price they get per hundredweight. We don’t need to pile on.” said Baldwin
The FDA recently issued guidance that non-dairy food products may be labeled with dairy terms, including milk.
