NEW YORK, NY (WSAU) — Tyler Kolek and David Joplin each scored 17 points to lead Marquette to a 70-68 win over UConn in the Big East Tournament Semifinals on Friday.
Sophomore Kam Jones added 14 points and six rebounds.
The two teams went to halftime tied at 38. Marquette did stretch their lead to 10 points at the 15-minute mark, though UConn managed to tie the game at 60 with under nine and a half minutes to play.
Joplin’s 17 points came off the bench and constituted nearly all of the Golden Eagle’s 20 bench points. Chase Ross scored the remaining three.
The Golden Eagles will play Xavier, who outlasted Creighton 82-60 in Friday’s other semifinal, for the league title this evening. The Big East Championship is one of 13 title games that will be played Saturday, with each winner clinching an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship tournament.
