PHOENIX, AZ (MetroSource-WSAU) The United States picked up a big win by defeating Colombia 3-2 in the World Baseball Classic at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Mike Trout drove-in all three runs for the U.S. on two singles. Kendall Graveman earned the win on the mound while Ryan Pressly notched the save. Brewers closer Devin Williams pitched a scoreless inning.
The USA finished pool play 3-and-1 and will advance to face Venezuela in the quarterfinals on Saturday night.
Elsewhere, Puerto Rico knocked off the Dominican Republic 5-2. New York Mets reliever Edwin Diaz, who earned the save for Puerto Rico, suffered a knee injury while celebrating the win that will knock him out for what reports fear will be a “significant period.”
In other action, Cuba defeated Australia 4-3 in the first quarterfinal matchup of the WBC, Mexico trounced Canada 10-3, and Venezuela topped Israel 5-1.
The action continues Thursday with one quarterfinal game on the slate. Mike Piazza and Italy are set to battle Shohei Ohtani and Japan in Tokyo.
