WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A man accused of playing a role in the death of his recently adopted daughter has been given a jail sentence and withheld probation.
Jonathan Stolp was in court for a plea and sentencing hearing on Friday afternoon. The 42-year-old entered a no contest plea to two counts of chronic neglect of a child and resisting or obstructing an officer. In exchange, one count of neglecting a child under the age of 6 was dismissed but read in.
Judge Scott Corbett then gave Stolp three years of probation that’s been withheld under several conditions. Those include completing all treatment or counseling along with a mental health assessment and the completion of parenting courses.
He will also be required to serve a ten-month jail sentence with work-release privileges. Stolp may serve that sentence in Chippewa County, where he currently resides and has been given 30 days to report.
Stolp and 31-year-old Sumitra Stolp had been caring for the girl for several months before formally adopting her in the summer of 2021. Shortly after she was adopted she was hospitalized with severe injuries that required her to be placed in a medically-induced coma. She died several days later.
Sumitra Stolp told several different stories regarding the child’s injuries, none of which aligned with the injuries doctors were treating.

Stolp will not be able to have contact with anyone under the age of 18 unless someone older than 25 is also present. He’s also been ordered to have no contact with Sumitra Stolp, who is also facing charges connected to the death of the child. Those charges include first-degree reckless homicide and child neglect. She’s scheduled to return to court on May 16th.
