MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Central Wisconsin Representative is one of the authors of two proposals that would make it illegal to outlaw the sale of an item or vehicle based on the source of its power.
John Spiros of Marshfield says with the rising popularity of electric or battery-powered vehicles, lawn equipment, and snowblowers it’s important to make sure that consumers who want traditional gas-powers apparatuses don’t get shut out.
“We should protect the freedom to choose which source of power or energy we prefer to utilize, whether it be gas, electric, or even something that hasn’t been invented,” said Spiros in his weekly E-News update on Friday.
Assembly Bill 141 would prohibit state and local governments from restricting the use or sale of a device based on the energy source that is used to power the device. Another bill, AB 142, has similar language for cars and other passenger vehicles.
Fellow representatives Jim Edming and Janel Brandtjen are also listed as authors of the bills. Mosinee’s Cory Tomczyk and Stevens Point’s Patrick Testin have co-sponsored the bills in the Senate.
The bills passed the Assembly Committee on State Affairs last week on identical 9-3 votes and will be considered by the Rules Committee this week.
