MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Scammers have struck again, this time impersonating the Wisconsin State Capitol Police dispatch phone number.
Wisconsin’s Departments of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and Administration (DOA) are alerting residents about these calls.
Scammers call from 608-266-7700, claiming there is an arrest warrant for the victim. They then tell the victim not to notify local police and demand payment.
In one case, a victim did wire money to the caller.
DATCP and DOA are looking to remind everyone that the Wisconsin State Capitol Police will not call to threaten you with warrants or arrest. They will never demand money over the phone or request personal financial information from you.
The Wisconsin State Capitol Police and the DOA are cooperating with federal authorities as their investigation continues.
