GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers made two selections during tonight’s 2nd round of the NFL draft.
They addressed the tight end position with Oregon State’s Luke Musgrove before trading the 45th overall pick to the Detroit Lions in exchange for the 48th overall pick and the 159th overall pick, and then trading back to the 50th overall pick and receiving the 179th overall pick.
The Packers finally selected Michigan State wide receiver Jayden Reed at 50th overall.
Musgrave played in just two games in 2022 but managed to catch 11 catches for 169 yards and one touchdown before suffering a knee injury. Musgrave caught 47 catches for 633 yards and two touchdowns throughout his career.
At 6-5, 253 pounds, Musgrove ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds and was The Athletics Dane Brugler’s No. 29 overall player and No. 3 tight end in the draft class.
CBS graded the Musgrove selection as a C+ saying, “Sleek, vertical seam-stretcher at TE. Bit of an enigma because he only played two games in 2022. Didn’t get to see how much YAC he could accumulate in college. Fast though. Some drops on film but will make grabs with arms extended. One-tricky pony type. Like the add for Jordan Love.”
Over his four seasons at Michigan State, Reed (5-11, 187) caught 203 passes for 2,866 yards and 26 touchdowns and returned three punts for touchdowns. He received two All-Big Ten selections.
The Athletics Dane Brugler ranked Reed as the 80th best player overall in the draft after he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds at the combine.
CBS graded the Reed selection as an A saying, “Draft crush of mine. Smaller and didn’t test through the roof but is such a crafty route runner and has plus speed. Gets open routinely, flashes after the catch, and tracks the football tremendously. Contested-catch winner.”
Musgrove and Reed will be able to help spread the field and provide Love with two additional excellent targets this coming season.
