ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made a stop in Rothschild on Saturday night to speak at the sold-out Marathon County Party Lincoln Day Dinner.
DeSantis took time to walk around the room to speak and shake hands with Republicans from all around the state.
Congressman Tom Tiffany also spoke during the event and highlighted what he felt were the most important things currently going on in Washington, D.C., such as defunding the effort to hire 87,000 additional IRS agents, making America energy independent, preventing biological men in schools from competing in women’s sports, and voting to secure the U.S. southern border.
Ron DeSantis received a loud ovation when Congressman Tiffany introduced him to the crowd, and his opening remarks offered what he described as good news by saying, “The state of Florida shows that Republicans can win again…Florida is the place where our shared ideas and our shared values actually become political reality…in Washington D.C., and many other states across this country, big conservative policy victories are few and far between, but in Florida, we deliver policy victories every single day.”
He continued by listing off some of his administration’s accomplishments, such as improving the state’s infrastructure, passing universal school choice, securing the state’s border from illegal immigration into the Florida Keys, and removing the District Attorneys from office who fail to uphold the state’s laws.
DeSantis also touted Florida’s massive population growth, of which the state’s Office of Economic and Demographic Research shows an estimated 329,717 new residents settled in Florida between April 2020 and April 2021, which was the largest number among the 49 states and Washington DC.
According to reports, DeSantis is quietly hiring staff for a presidential run in 2024, and many believe an official announcement may even be coming sometime this month.
Recent polls show former President Trump with a wide lead over other Republican candidates, including DeSantis, if he does indeed decide to run. A CBS poll from earlier this week had former President Trump 36 points ahead of DeSantis, and the latest data from Five Thirty-Eight has Trump 29.5 points ahead of DeSantis.
These polls also demonstrate that whoever wins the Republican primary will be in a tightly contested race against President Joe Biden, who announced his re-election bid last Tuesday. DeSantis currently holds a 5-point lead over Biden in Georgia, while former President Trump trails Biden by a point in the pivotal swing state, according to Public Opinion Strategies.
Noble Predictive Insights also has Ron DeSantis currently trailing President Biden by just one point in Nevada and tied with Biden in Wisconsin. Their poll also found Wisconsin independents currently favor Ron DeSantis by two percentage points over President Biden, while the same independents prefer the president over Trump by nine percentage points.
