WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – An extensive network of accounts openly dedicated to the commission and purchase of underage-sex content is connected and promoted by Instagram, the popular social media platform owned by Meta Platforms, according to Wall Street Journal and Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst research.
The Journal and the academic researchers discovered that Instagram links pedophiles and directs them to material vendors using recommendation systems that are excellent at connecting people with similar interests.
The sexualized profiles on Instagram are open about their desire, despite being hidden from view for the majority of users of the platform. Researchers discovered that Instagram made it possible for users to search for explicit hashtags like #preteensex and connected them to accounts that utilized the terms to promote the sale of child sex products.
In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Meta said, “Child exploitation is a horrific crime.” The company was also looking into “ways to actively defend against this behavior,” it said in the same statement. According to the report, Meta claimed to have taken down 27 pedophile networks on the site and is aiming to take down more.
This report comes only weeks after U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released an advisory calling for improved social connection for children and teens. He noted that social media platforms like Instagram can worsen and cause mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, disordered eating, attention disorders, low self-esteem, feelings of exclusion, and suicidal ideations, among others.
