NEW YORK, NY (WSAU) – According to a copy of a letter acquired by Axios, Fox News has informed Tucker Carlson’s attorneys that the former prime-time anchor had broken his agreement with the network when he started his own Twitter show on Tuesday.
On Tuesday night, just after Carlson tweeted the first episode of his new show which has been viewed over 90 million times, Fox News general counsel Bernard Gugar wrote to Carlson’s attorneys to inform them that Carlson “is in breach” of his contract agreement.
Carlson’s lawyers responded by saying, “Fox defends its very existence on freedom of speech grounds. Now they want to take Tucker Carlson’s right to speak freely away from him because he took to social media to share his thoughts on current events,” said Carlson’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, in a statement to Axios.
Axios also previously reported that Carlson has accused Fox of deceiving him and claimed that Fox violated the terms of his contract when senior officials of the company broke their commitments to Carlson “intentionally and with reckless disregard for the truth.”
According to a person familiar with Carlson’s legal team, they disagree with the network’s attempt to prevent Carlson from appearing on Twitter since they claim the platform does not directly compete with Fox News. The source also confirmed to Axios that Carlson was told by a senior Fox executive that the network’s goal is to keep him sidelined until 2025.
Fox has stated that they’ve been negotiating in good faith with Carlson to try to come to a mutually agreeable solution.
