STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — An Appleton man has been sentenced to jail time after reaching a plea deal with the state.
Axel Crus-Zelaya entered a no contest plea for a charge of negligent operation of a vehicle, a Class A misdemeanor. Judge Louis Molepske then found him guilty.
The charges stem from a rollover crash that occurred on US Highway 10 near Amherst Junction last November. The vehicle rolled and came to rest upright on its tires, killing Miguel Angel Hernandez-Valdivia of Appleton.
Investigators found Crus-Zelaya was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. Speed and poor road conditions factored into the incident.

Judge Molepske sentenced Crus-Zelaya to 180 days in jail with credit for more than 200 days already served while awaiting trial. He will also pay fines, a DNA sample surcharge, and court costs.
Those fines include a $213 traffic ticket for driving too fast for the road conditions.
The 30-year-old was initially charged with causing a death by knowingly operating a vehicle without a valid license, which is a felony.
