MERRILL, WI (WSAU-Wisconsin Radio Network) –Merrill’s mayor is overriding his police chief’s decision not to directly enforce Governor Evers’ mask order.
In a statement on Wednesday, Mayor Derek Woellner said that he wants police to enforce Emergency Order number 1. Under state guidelines, that could lead to a 200 dollar civil fine, but in most cases, police will be there to educate and help people if they don’t have a mask on.
Police chief Corey Bennett stated earlier in the week that he wasn’t planning on direct enforcement, but would still work with business owners who need help with people causing scenes for not wearing masks in their businesses.
