CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – The Biden Administration’s Department of Justice claims that Hunter Biden did not get special treatment in his plea bargain on his taxes and a gun charge. That simply isn’t true.
How can you tell?
By looking at who’s making the allegations.
First, a review of what the allegations are: That the agents who investigated Hunter’s tax evasion were instructed to make no reference to “the big guy” is their reports or court filings. Investigators wanted to search Joe Biden’s beach house in Delaware where Hunter lived during the time in question, and a storage unit nearby. The warrant for the beach house was quashed. The search of the storage unit was shared with Hunter’s lawyers in advance. The case was slow-walked so that the statute of limitations would have run our for Hunter’s 2015 and 2016 tax refurns. That’s when his work began with his Chinese and Ukrainian business partners. A leaked social media post has Hunter Biden insisting that a payment be made, and that his then Vice President-father is in the room. The New York Post reports that the dispute was over a $5-million payment.
Usually allegations like this come from an anonymous whistleblower. One of the sources is. But the other has gone public. He is Gary Shapley. And he isn’t a nobody. He’s the supervising IRS investigator who was overseeing the Hunter Biden case. For him to offer his name immediately makes the special-treatment allegations credible. Here is someone who knows how similar investigations would be handled, and knows what had happened specifically in this case.
What reason would he have to lie? Undoubtedly he has prosecuted both Republicans and Democrats; if he was considered a partisan he wouldn’t have been assigned this case.
I’d be skeptical if this story was based only on anonymous sources. When a person’s name is shielded, it’s much easier to stray from the truth.
In the past week, this story has grown legs. There will be a time when Gary Shapley will be called to testify in front of a House committee. The story he’s told so far will be attention-grabbing. The mainstream media won’t be able to ignore it.
