WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — AAA Wisconsin has activated its Tow to Go safe ride home program this weekend.
Beginning Friday at 6:00 PM anyone who has accidentally had too much at their 4th of July celebration is invited to call 855 2-TOW-2-GO, or 855-286-9246, to request a free ride for themselves and their vehicle. AAA Wisconsin Director of Public Affairs Nick Jarmusz says their goal is to eliminate all excuses someone may have for driving drunk.
“Maybe their designated driver ends up drinking or they end up drinking when they didn’t plan to. They may not have a way to get home so they feel like they don’t want to leave their car somewhere overnight, so I’ll just drive it home,” said Jarmusz. “We want to make sure that isn’t an excuse.”
Drivers will take you and your vehicle anywhere within 10 miles of the pickup point, which Jarmusz says is more than enough in most cases. The service is free to anyone, no matter if they are a AAA member or not, and confidential. No record of the ride will be kept.
“We just want to make sure you have the option,” added Jarmusz.
Jarmusz notes that the program is not supposed to be your first choice for a safe ride home. Tow to Go drivers will not make appointments or reservations to pick up your vehicle, and anyone celebrating is still encouraged to have a designated driver. “This is a last resort. Not necessarily something that you will plan on utilizing before you go out, but if you find yourself in that situation we want to remove any excuses that there might be for getting behind the wheel [while intoxicated].”
The program will end Wednesday, July 5th at 6:00 AM.
