WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) – A new scam has been reported in central Wisconsin and it involves a local trusted bank used by residents.
The text attempts to state that the victim owes Paper City Credit Union money and to click a link to make a payment. The link will then take the person to a website that looks similar to the bank’s but features a couple of inconstancies such as the web address or misspelled words.
Wood County Investigator Sergeant Jeremy Keith states that the truth can always be found in the details and contacting your local law enforcement is always a good idea saying, ” Call somebody…people always say that they don’t wanna waste our time and it’s not a waste of our time. We would much rather spend two minutes on the phone with someone explaining that it’s a scam than to have to investigate that they just lost thousands of dollars.”
According to the FTC, Americans lost a record $8.8 billion to scams in 2022 alone and the top five fraud categories were prizes, sweepstakes, lotteries, investment scams, and fake business and job opportunities. The FTC also notes that honest organizations won’t call, email, or text to ask for your personal information, like your Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, and to call the institution directly if you’re ever unsure.
