WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – The Pentagon will be able to call up to 3,000 military reservists for deployment to Europe as a part of a directive that President Joe Biden issued on Thursday.
Just days after the war in Ukraine reached the 500-day mark, the president decided it is “necessary to augment” U.S. forces, which The Washington Post reports to be roughly 80,000 troops, on a mission to deter further Russian aggression.
The Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), which includes service personnel who are reaching the end of their enlistment contracts and are no longer expected to attend regular exercises and training, can provide up to 450 of the troops authorized for activation under Biden’s directive.
According to Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for the Pentagon, who spoke with The Washington Post, stated that Biden’s new order makes it possible to use reserve or National Guard troops to support Operation Atlantic Resolve and ensures that they will “be entitled to the same kind of benefits as their active duty counterparts.”
The Pentagon reported on Thursday that the United States had officially delivered cluster bombs to Ukraine. Due to reports that the Ukrainian army is nearly out of ammunition, Biden stated that he decided to provide Ukraine with these munitions, which are outlawed in more than 100 nations due to the risk they represent to civilians.
Last year, President Biden approved the deployment of 3,000 additional US troops to Poland, Germany, and Romania, and he issued a promise to the American people that no US forces would be deployed directly to Ukraine to defend its borders or to support a war against Russia.
