WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he has received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith stating that he is a target in the federal grand jury investigation into the events leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot on the U.S. Capitol.
On Sunday night, Trump stated that he received a “target letter” from Smith’s office offering him the chance to testify before the grand jury this week. Trump shared this claim on Truth Social. Although it is unclear what allegations Trump would be facing, the news suggests that there may be another indictment coming.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Smith is thought to be concentrating on Trump’s attempts to prevent the certification of electoral votes rather than the speech he delivered at the Ellipse moments before the riot broke out at the Capitol.
Trump did not provide evidence to back the assertion. Smith’s office did not immediately comment.
