Green Bay Packers
GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – With the first practice of training camp only a week away, there are still several cap-friendly veteran players the Green Bay Packers could sign to help their young team this season.
- Teddy Bridgewater: The Packers currently only have one quarterback on the roster who has started an NFL game, and despite Jordan Love sitting behind one of the league’s all-time greats for three years, he could use a veteran like Bridgewater, who has nine years of experience with five different NFL teams and a Pro Bowl appearance in 2015.
- Jarvis Landry: Green Bay currently has one of the youngest receiving cores in the league and could use a veteran receiver like Landry who can help mentor rookie slot receiver Jayden Reed and second-year stars Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. Landry has battled injuries over the last couple of seasons, but with five Pro Bowls under his belt, he could become an instant leader in the team’s wide receiver room.
- Mercedes Lewis: The Packers heavily invested in two tight ends early in the 2023 NFL Draft, but a player like Lewis, who has spent the last few seasons in Green Bay and is well known as one of the best blocking tight ends in the league, could help the rookies master the position at a professional level and also provide extra protection for Jordan Love.
- John Johnson III: Green Bay re-signed Rudy Ford, signed Tarvarius Moore and Jonathan Owens, and drafted Anthony Johnson Jr., but only Owens has actual starting experience in the NFL. Last season was not Johnson’s best after he recorded 17 missed tackles, but after playing for Joe Berry in Los Angeles, he would be comfortable in the Packers scheme and could help fill the hole left by Adrian Amos.
- Yannick Ngakoue: After drafting Lukas Van Ness and continuing to work with second-year player Devonte Wyatt, Green Bay could use a veteran pass rusher alongside Preston Smith, who knows how to get to the quarterback. Longtime starter Dean Lowery signed with Minnesota earlier this offseason, making room for the team to consider a veteran like Ngakoue or even Melvin Ingram if the money is right.
Honorable mention: Dalton Risner – The Packers currently have one of the best offensive lines in the league, but as we all know, injuries happen in the NFL, especially on the offensive line. Risner was the primary starter for the last four years for the Denver Broncos and could immediately fill in for Elgton Jenkins or Jon Runyan if needed.
