MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) – Houston-based Avelo Airlines officially announced on Wednesday morning that they will begin offering direct flights from Central Wisconsin to Orlando, FL.
“There is tremendous opportunity in Central Wisconsin,” said Avelo’s Head of Network Planning Trevor Yealey. “This [airport] has been incredibly underserved. With the community and demographics of the area, we are quite confident that we can pick up many travelers to go down to Florida.”
Avelo will operate this route twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays beginning October 5, 2023. Yealey says they will be running a Boeing 747-800 aircraft with 189 seats on them
One-way fares between CWA and MCO will come at an introductory rate of $49. That fare must be booked by July 29th, and the trip must be completed by January 8th, 2024. Additional fees will apply for carry-on or checked bags. After the introductory rate expires prices will fluctuate based on market conditions and other outside factors.
Yealey says two flights a week on Thursdays and Sundays might not seem like a lot, but they don’t plan to stay on that schedule. Avelo will be monitoring passenger counts and other metrics with an eye toward expanding service at CWA shortly. “We like to start small in places but build and grow as we see how the market will react and perform. The goal is always to grow into something larger than two flights per week.
“We have five bases across the US. Burbank, which is near Los Angels, New Haven, CT, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham (NC), and then Orlando. We will open a sixth base in Las Vegas this September. Any of those could be potential options in the future and of course we are also looking for other opportunities to serve even if it isn’t at one of our bases,” added Yealey.
Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy spoke about the matter in a press release saying, “Central Wisconsin say hello to Avelo! We are excited to announce exclusive nonstop service to Orlando. Avelo’s combination of everyday low fares, industry-leading reliability, and friendly service, coupled with CWA’s time and money-saving convenience will inspire people from across the region to enjoy all Orlando has to offer. Getting to the Theme Park Capital of the World is now easier and more affordable than ever. With the addition of Wisconsin to Avelo’s nationwide route network, Avelo will now serve half the United States.”
Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation Secretary and CEO Missy Hughes also weighed in on the announcement saying, “Avelo’s decision to extend air service to Central Wisconsin Airport is a win for residents of Northern and Central Wisconsin. This will create opportunities for business and recreational travel and make central Wisconsin an even more attractive place to live, work, and grow. As we have seen in other regions, we know this expansion will result in new and diversified economic impacts for the local communities as they take advantage of the partnership with Avelo.”
With the addition of CWA to its portfolio, Avelo now offers flights to 25 different states and more than 40 airports.
This announcement comes only a month after American Airlines announced that they would be adding a third daily flight from CWA to Chicago, which officially began on July 5th.
