WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – According to a CNN poll issued on Friday, most Americans oppose the US continuing to help Ukraine as its conflict with Russia approaches the one-and-a-half-year milestone.
More than 1,200 adults participated in the SSRS survey, and of them, 55% thought Congress should not authorize more cash for Ukraine, while 45% said that more is needed. Most Americans (51%) also agreed that the U.S. has already contributed enough to the Ukrainian war effort, while 48% believed that more should be done.
The poll also found that only 45% of respondents approve of how President Biden has handled the war, and just 20% support sending U.S. forces to fight in the conflict.
These figures from CNN correspond with recent data from Gallup, which shows that support for U.S. continued involvement in Ukraine is slipping. Independents are more likely now (43%) than last summer (34%) to prefer ending the war quickly, and Republicans are more likely now (50%) than when the war began (43%) to say the U.S. is doing too much to support Ukraine.
The U.S. has spent $113 billion on the war so far, which vastly outpaces what other allied nations have spent on the war effort. With the president’s poll numbers continuing to dwindle and his average national approval rating currently at 34%, many experts have begun to wonder when the Biden Administration may begin changing their policy on the war effort.
Back in June, Ukrainian forces breached Russia’s first line of less fortified defenses and liberated three villages in the south of the Donetsk region, but since then their counteroffensive has made only modest gains. Ukraine’s defense minister claims that their recent gains were only a “preview” of a much bigger push to come.
