GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – With the Packers first preseason game only a couple of days away, the team has released their first unofficial depth chart.
The announcement comes with several surprises, with the most notable coming at slot receiver and safety.
At slot receiver, Samori Toure is currently listed ahead of rookies Jayden Reed and Grant DuBose. Toure has had a strong training camp and has emerged as one of Love’s early favorite targets. Reed is also listed behind Keisean Nixon as the starting kick/punt returner.
As for safety, Rudy Ford is listed ahead of Jonathan Owens. Ford started six games for the Packers last season and played well; however, Owens started seventeen games for the Texans in 2022 and has been getting a large portion of the starting reps as of late, prompting speculation that Owens could jump Ford before Week 1.
The Packers have also put rookie quarterback Sean Clifford in as Jordan Love’s backup over recent signing Alex McGough. Clifford took reps with the second-string players yesterday after the recent release of Danny Etling, who had been listed as Love’s backup prior.
The battle at outside wide receiver is also heating up between Bo Melton and rookie Dontayvion Wicks, who are listed behind Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. Melton spent last season on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad but has yet to appear in a regular-season NFL game. Packers Insider Zach Kruse notes that both Melton and Wicks will likely get a lot of playing time this preseason, which will decide who wins the position.
Other notable decisions so far include Zach Tom, currently ahead of Yosh Nijman and Rasheed Walker for the starting right tackle job; Lukas Van Ness, listed ahead of Kingsley Enagbare to backup Preston Smith; Patrick Taylor, ahead of Tyler Goodson, to be the third running back on the roster; and Tyler Davis, ahead of rookie Tucker Kraft, to play alongside Luke Musgrave, who is listed as the team’s starting tight end.
