MADISON, WI (WSAU) – State Senator Cory Tomczyk did not hold back when speaking about Gov. Tony Evers’s recent vetoes.
Last week, Gov. Evers signed seven bills and vetoed 10 others, which included bills that offered consumers the ability to choose what kind of energy sources they could use when it came to needed items such as lawnmowers.
“These measures don’t restrict someone from having an electric vehicle or lawnmower; they just say that the government can’t force us to use one type of energy source. Anytime there is legislation that leaves freedom of choice for the people and limits what the government can tell us to do, I’m all for that,” Tomczyk stated.
Wisconsin Manufactures and Commerce also criticized the Governor’s decision to veto the bills in a statement last week saying, “Energy decisions should be dictated by energy consumers, not heavy-handed government mandates. Today’s vetoes are a step backward for Wisconsin businesses, families, and every consumer seeking to use the most affordable and reliable energy products.”
The recent California legislation requiring all new automobiles sold in the state to operate on electricity or hydrogen by 2035 and the New York statute banning natural gas stoves, and furnaces in most new buildings beginning in 2026 prompted the state Legislature to pass those measures in June. New York City also recently attempted to pass a measure that would ban pizzerias from using coal or wood-fired ovens which proponents stated could cut carbon emissions up to 75%
Sen. Tomczyk spoke about the recent climate-related bills that have made national headlines saying, “If you really think the amount of pizza ovens are inflicting pizza ovens on the environment please…volcanos put out so much chemicals and ash into the air and all the pizza ovens in the world won’t even match a small volcano.”
Wisconsin Democrats have stated that they have no plan to enact similar legislation or policies to California or New York.
