TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A 12-year-old boy is dead after an apparent drowning in Lake Michigan near Neshotah Beach.
Two Rivers police say they were called to the beach at 11:51 Saturday morning for a swimmer who had disappeared after having difficulty in the water. The victim was last seen in the water off the northernmost end of the beach.
Life-saving measures were performed when the boy was taken to shore, and they continued as he was transported to Aurora Medical Center in Two Rivers. Police say those efforts were not successful.
“As a reminder, rough water and/or currents in Lake Michigan, and its tributaries, can be very strong and dangerous,” wrote Two Rivers Police Chief Benjamin Meinnert in a news release. “Please exercise caution while enjoying time in or near any body of water and know your physical limitations, utilize Personal Flotation Devices (PDF’s), and avoid the water during beach warnings.”
Water rescue teams from Two Rivers Fire, Manitowoc Fire, and the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department assisted, along with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department’s drone team, a Coast Guard helicopter, and Eagle III.
