RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – Nearly 80% of Wisconsin is experiencing drought conditions right now.
It’s been more than a decade since we’ve had a statewide impact like this.
It prompted the Wisconsin DNR to create an online Drought Resource page. Adam Freihoefer says it’s a one-stop-shop for people struggling with or that have questions about drought. He’s the Water Use Section Manager at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. “This website, much like the one we do with groundwater flooding will be updated to reflect concerns or questions we get. So it’s it’s a living kind of site to make sure we’re getting 90% or 95% of the questions answered. As we try to navigate whatever this drought looks like in the weeks and months ahead.”
You can find drought updates, water availability, wildfire risk, and learn best practices to conserve water.
There’s also a place to report. Freihoefer says that helps them determine the extent of the drought. “People like the National Weather Service, you know, use that information to help them make the call and where we’re seeing the drought and what it’s actually meaning. You know, we can’t be everywhere with so people are helping us out, kind of validating what their experiences with the drought at that point in time.”
The drought is having a big impact on reservoirs in the Northwoods.
