WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Port Edwards man will serve time in the state prison system for a 5th OWI following a crash in Weston.
Thomas Shelley was sentenced to 18 months in prison and 30 months (two and a half years) without a driver’s license for the incident, which occurred in May of 2022.
Officers found Shelley’s vehicle in a grassy area along Schofield Avenue with front-end and passenger-side damage. Shelley was found passed out in the driver’s seat and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigators determined that Shelley was driving westbound when he veered off the road, struck some mailboxes, and then hit a tree. Additionally, the airbags on the vehicle had been deployed from the incident.
Shelley later admitted to having a “couple of drinks” before driving. Officers also found a bag of marijuana on his person.
In addition to the prison time and a suspended license, Shelley will pay over $2,400 in fines.
