STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin State Representative Katrina Shankland has announced a run for the 3rd Congressional District seat.
The Democrat has served the Stevens Point area since 2012 when she was first elected to the Assembly, and says she’s ready to take on a new challenge in Washington. “I am ready to roll up my sleeves and fight against extremism and get things done for our community–just as I’ve done in the state legislature,” she said in a press release Tuesday morning.
Shankland made the announcement Tuesday morning in front of the Point Brewing Company on Water Street in Stevens Point surrounded by representatives from multiple unions including the IBEW State Conference and two chapters of IAFF. The Pipe Trades Association and SPARC AFT Local 6505- the UWSP Teacher’s Union.
Shankland said that sign of support shows her commitment to working-class people and families. “In my last few campaigns, I’ve had people of all ideologies endorse and support me because I’m known to work across the aisles to deliver results. That’s exactly what people want from their member of Congress. I think a candidate like me [who] has a proven track record of winning and delivering for Wisconsin is exactly what everyone in the Wisconsin 3rd [district] wants.”
Shankland is now the 4th Democrat to enter the race after Rebecca Cooke, Aaron Nytes, and Tara Johnson.
The Central Wisconsin native knows going after the 3rd District seat means she needs to expand her campaign territory well beyond Stevens Point, but she’s ready for that challenge. “This summer I’ve been traveling to La Crosse, Eau Claire, Menomonie, Chippewa Falls, Viroqua, Sparta, Tomah, you name it. The 19 counties of the 3rd [district] are important to me, both rural and urban.”
As Shankland announced her bid Cook’s campaign released a statement noting that the Eau Claire businesswoman had raised $400,000 in the last quarter.
