MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Milwaukee Brewers skipper Craig Counsell is expected to be one of the most sought-after managerial candidates this offseason, and according to Jon Heyman and Mike Puma of the New York Post, he has “serious” interest in the top position with the New York Mets.
The 53-year-old Counsell’s contract with the Brewers is scheduled to expire this week, but the franchise is letting him speak with other teams in the hopes of keeping him in the area.
Although Counsell lives in Milwaukee with his wife and four children and grew up there while his father was the Brewers’ community relations director, Heyman and Puma were informed by many sources that Counsell and his wife like the idea of living in New York.
Zack Meisel and Will Sammon of The Athletic report that he was in Cleveland on Monday for an interview with the Cleveland Guardians.
Counsell is predicted to become baseball’s highest-paid manager based on the level of interest and the bidding war that has ensued between the Mets and Guardians. He has had a record of 707-625 and has won three NL Central division titles since taking over in Milwaukee back in 2015.
