MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers have officially begun their search for their next manager following former manager Craig Counsell’s decision to leave for the Chicago Cubs.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Don Mattingly, the former manager of the Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers, is among the candidates the Brewers are considering.
Astros hitting coach Troy Snitker, former Brewers 2B Rickie Weeks, Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough, and bench coaches Pat Murphy (MIL), and Joe Espada (HOU) are also expected to receive interest for the position.
Mattingly is the most well-known name among the contenders Rosenthal mentions. As a player, he was a six-time All-Star, and with the Marlins in 2020, he won NL Manager of the Year. Throughout his twelve seasons with the Marlins and Dodgers, he was 889-950.
Following the 2022 season, Mattingly parted ways with the Marlins and accepted a bench coaching position with the Toronto Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Brewers chose Weeks with the second overall pick in the 2003 MLB draft. He has been a member of Milwaukee’s player development staff since February 2022 and has played for the organization for 11 of his 14 MLB seasons.
