PLOVER, Wis. (WAOW-WSAU) — The Plover Fire Department, as well as the Portage County and Waupaca departments, all participated in the Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) drill. These fire departments want to make sure they are prepared for any dangerous situatation.
The event started with a planned fake emergency call of an ammonia leak at Monogram Foods.
“A hazardous material is anything that can hurt people or the environment so Diesel Fuel, Gasoline, Ammonia things like that,” said Portage County, Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator, Bonnie Skalecke. Throughout the drill, first responders communicated and worked together to complete the drill.
For Plover Fire Department Captain, Brandon Cisewski, this was his first drill and he said wanted to learn as much as possible.
“It’s a little exciting to try to hone in on our skills and see what we are capable of as a department,” said Cisewski.
Mark Deaver is the Plover Fire Department Chief, and he states that this event is so much more than just a drill.
“We have several facilities throughout Portage County that have Ammonia and different chemicals. We would like to train to be able to respond to those calls,” said Deaver.
It’s all in the name of keeping people safe.
