MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Wisconsin Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin may have another challenger soon as the National Republican Senatorial Committee is moving its support behind businessman Eric Hovde.
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Steve Daines told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Wednesday that “Eric Hovde is going to get in that race” and that “we’re behind him.”
Hovde spoke to Wisconsin Right Now about the NRSC’s comments, saying, “I’m flattered by people’s support for Wisconsin and the NRSC. And I’m seriously looking at the race, but right now my focus is on wrapping up the year-end with my companies and the holidays with my family.”
Rejani Raveendran, a US immigrant and chair of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College Republicans, is the sole confirmed contender against Baldwin so far. She said in her campaign announcement that her priorities as a Senator would be border security, combating illegal immigration of illegal drugs, and fighting for medical freedom—stating that she would oppose new vaccination requirements. Raveendran has also backed former US President Donald Trump since 2016.
Several other Republican candidates have also been rumored to run against Baldwin, including former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and businessman Scott Mayer, who is the father of NASCAR driver Sam Mayer.
According to the Washington Examiner, Charles Nichols, the former campaign manager for Rebecca Kleefisch, is consulting for Mayer, as is Juston Johnson, who managed the Sen. Ron Johnson campaign back in 2010. When asked about the NRSC’s apparent endorsement of Hovde, Mayer said, “As a side note, the NRSC does not elect you. People in Wisconsin elect you.”
