MARSHFIELD, Wis.(WAOW–WSAU)–December 16, 2023, marked Wreaths Across America Day. To honor the day residents, of Marshfield gathered to lay 544 Wreaths.
225 volunteers joined together at Hillside Cemetery in Marshfield to honor veterans before Christmas.
“You know they say a veteran is never forgotten until you don’t speak their name, so we want to make sure we speak their name today as we lay a wreath in memory and honor them,” said Tim Norlin, the location coordinator for Wreaths Across America in Marshfield.
The event that was organized by Wreaths Across America was started in 1992, by Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington. The company had made too many wreaths and then decided to put them on grave sites. It has since become a tradition for the organization.
Mary Tollefson was one of the wreath-laying volunteers, and she states events like this help honor her dad who served in the Pacific War.
“A definition of a veteran is anything from a son, a father, or a friend, and we all need to respect that. We all need to be here and honor them. It doesn’t matter what day of the year it is,” said Wreath Volunteer, Mary Tollefson.
The organization has been around for over 30 years and organizers say they look forward to hosting this event again.
