MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has officially launched the new electric vehicle/hybrid identification sticker for license plates.
The move is in response to a new law passed by the Legislature requiring all such vehicles to be identified with an orange and black sticker on both front and back plates.
Drivers should place the sticker on the top right corner of both plates, so it is easily visible in the event of an accident or emergency.
Electric Vehicles and other vehicles with battery technology present unique challenges for first responders. That includes burn patterns in the event of a fire which would require different attack methods than those presented by an internal combustion vehicle.

Current owners of EVs and Hybrids will receive their stickers in the mail by June. All such vehicles purchased through a dealership will receive their stickers along with the rest of their registration materials when they apply for their plates.
Wisconsin had nearly 146,000 electric and hybrid vehicles on the road in 2023.
