COLUMBUS, OH and MADISON, WI (WSAU) — After playing to a 0-0 stalemate through 40 minutes the Wisconsin men’s hockey team went back-and-forth with Ohio State before falling 3-2 in overtime on Friday.
The Badgers opened the scoring five minutes into the 3rd on a goal from Jack Horbach. Ben Dexheimer gave Wisconsin a 2-1 lead 11 minutes later, only to see Ohio State tie the game with just over 90 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Buckeyes would net the game-winner with about 20 seconds remaining in the extra frame.
Kyle McClellan stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced and took the loss.
The result does net the Badgers a point in the Big Ten standings, where they remain in second place at 13-5-1. Ohio State remains in last place in the B1G at 2-15-2, the same two teams will play again this afternoon to close out their weekend set.
The Badger women also went to overtime on Friday but came out on top 4-3 against WCHA rival Minnesota. Laney Potter, Marianne Picard, and Britta Curl all scored in regulation to give the Badgers a 3-2 edge going into the game’s final minute.
Minnesota would tie the game on a power play goal following a two-minute minor charged to Laila Edwards for roughing. But she made up for it by netting the game-winner in the extra frame.
Jane Gervais made eight saves in each period plus two in overtime, giving her 26 saves on the day.
Wisconsin and Minnesota wrap up their weekend series this afternoon at LaBahn Arena.
