GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers and star running back Aaron Jones are reportedly working on a pay-cut deal to keep him with the team for this upcoming season.
Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the parties are trying to come to an agreement that would match Jones’s projected free agency pay and reduce his salary cap number.
According to Silverstein, if they are unable to come to an agreement over the next two weeks, Jones may be released by the Packers and given the chance to consider his choices in free agency.
Jones, who is in the last year of a four-year, $48 million contract, will make $11 million in base pay, with the possibility of earning $258,000 in roster incentives each game and a $500,000 workout bonus.
The Packers have hosted meetings with three running backs at the NFL Combine this week, including Wisconsin’s Braelon Allen, Texas’s Jonathan Brooks, and Notre Dame’s Audric Estime. All three of those backs are expected to be drafted on the second day of April’s NFL draft.
Green Bay has shown in recent years that they’re willing to draft a running back early, such as by selecting A.J. Dillion in the 2nd round of the 2020 draft, Jamaal Williams in the 4th round and Aaron Jones in the 5th round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Eddie Lacy in the 2nd round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and Alex Green in the 3rd round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
