CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – The Supreme Court’s ruling this week could not be more clear: Congress, not the states, will decide whether a candidate for federal office is an insurrectionist.
So now there are three left-wing democrats who have introduced an insurrectionist resolution against Donald Trump. They are Jamie Raskin of Maryland, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of Florida, and Eric Swalell of California. To them, Donald Trump is such an unacceptable choice, he must be removed from the ballot because millions of us are prepared to vote for him.
Raskin is not disturbed at all that, after the Trump-Clinton election in 2016, he tried to block the counting of the Electoral College votes after Trump’s victory. If you have followed the rants of Wasserman-Schultz you might conclude that she was dropped on her head as a child; she peddled the Trump-Russia hoax for years. Swalell is infamous for his girlfriend Feng-Feng, who turned out to be a Chinese spy. This is the crowd that has the audacity to tell you who you may vote for.
The road they dare to go down is dangerous and will change political norms. Recall that it was Democrats in Congress who began using impeachment as a political tool, filing articles against Donald Trump twice… once after he was no longer in office. Now insurrection will also blow in the political wind.
Someday, one party will have a simple majority in the House of Representatives and will have 60 votes in the U.S. Senate. George W. Bush was about to have those majorities until Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords changed parties. The next time the stars align that way, Republicans can put the insurrection tag on Democrats or vise-versa. The hatred of Donald Trump is so great that little or no thought is given to the anti-democratic precedents that are being set. Once one side uses its power this way, the other side will when they can.
Jamie Raskin and his ilk don’t trust the voters. That’s completely understandable; the voters in Maryland’s Montgomery County are dumb enough to put him in office.
