CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – I’m not about to pass myself off as an expert on the internal politics of Israel.
But I know this about war and human nature. The American people did not want peace after the Battle of the Bulge or the Battle of Midway. We want peace when the war is won. When military objectives have been achieved an an opponent is defeated does war give way to peace.
I imagine that’s the mindset in Israel as well. 3,200 of their citizens were killed, raped and taken hostage last October. Hamas is much less of a viable force, but they are not defeated. Those who cry for peace now are breathtakingly shortsighted.
Here in the United States, Joe Biden is trying to shore up his support among Arab-Americans. Apparently securing the votes of those who are on the side of murderers, rapists and hostage-takers is important to his re-election campaign. So Biden constantly refers to Israel’s government as the “most conservative in that nation’s history.” He leaves out the part that it is an elected government, reflecting the will of Israel’s voters. Biden is no better than Barack Obama, who openly campaigned against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Now Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who has more sympathy for Palestinians than his own Jewish bretheren, is calling Netanyahu an obstacle to peace. He wants just one political party in Netanyahu’s governming coalition to withdraw its support and force elections. It won’t happen. Netanyahu wisely formed a unity government after the October attacks. They too know there is no peace until victory.
American medding in an allies’ politics is unseemly. Somehow they forget that Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, started this war. Figuring out how to feed and protect their civilians is their duty, not their military oppoents. And is Chuck Schumer so obtuse as to not realize that if he was attending that desert concert in October, he most certainly would have been beheaded and dragged through the streets. Not as a useful idiot who might someday advocate for a premature peace, but for no other reason than because he is a Jew.
