RIB MOUNTAIN, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau Board of Education member has announced a run at one of Central Wisconsin’s newly drawn Assembly districts.
Cory Sillars will seek the 87th Assembly district seat, which now includes portions of Marathon, Portage, Waupaca, and Shawano Counties. Areas of Marathon County that are included are Rib Mountain and Mosinee.
Sillars will run as a Republican, meaning there will likely be an August primary. Mosinee Mayor Brent Jacobson has also declared candidacy for the seat.
When asked why he’s running, Sillars stated that spending needs to be reigned in, saying, “When you look at our budget at the state level, it’s gone up dramatically in the last six years, and instead of the taxpayers of the state getting that surplus money back through a tax cut or maybe just through a straight refund back to them, our legislature is continuing to just spend that surplus.”
Sillars is serving terms on both the Wausau Board of Education and Rib Mountain Village Board. His seat on the School Board is up in April 2026, and his Village Supervisor term expires this April.
