GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers and quarterback Jordan Love have begun the process of making him their franchise quarterback for the long haul.
According to GM Brian Gutekunst, who spoke about the discussions on Monday morning, fans will need to be patient, saying, “There have been some preliminary discussions. We want to do it the right way, and certainly the sooner the better. But at the same time, we want to make sure we do it the right way. So we’ve started, but it’s not something that’s going to go quickly; it’ll take some time.”
Gutekunst did not elaborate on what the deal could look like financially, but Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti stated in a story published in February that Love could be the highest-paid player in franchise history when all is said and done, saying, “Love more than outplayed his bridge extension in 2023, making it unrealistic that he would play out the 2024 campaign on a 1-year, $11 million contract. The deal contains large roster bonuses that vest 1 offseason early for 2026 ($37.5M) and 2027 ($25M), raising the practical guarantee on this deal to $150M. Love secures a $40 million raise this season within this projection.”
While speaking to the Pivot podcast last week, Love stated he believes Green Bay is ready to compete for a Super Bowl in 2024, saying, “The organization believes it’s a perfect time to have a chance to win a Super Bowl this year,” and “Those conversations we had after that 49ers game were man-like, work harder, try and find ways to get better—because next year we’re going to do it.”
Love’s excitement is likely shared by many NFL commentators and fans this off-season as the Packers are set to return nearly their entire roster from 2023, acquired All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs and star safety Xavier McKinney earlier this month via free agency, and will add five top 100 players during the NFL draft.
