ANTIGO, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — A downtown Antigo building is being torn down after part of it collapsed on Monday.
WAOW TV reports that some bricks fell from the side of the building at about 3:00 PM Monday, forcing the city to close off a portion of East 5th Avenue and Highway 45.
A wrecker was on the scene within a couple of hours. Crews could be seen packing the gas meter with sand before knocking down one wall, then evaluating the rest of the building before tearing down other areas.
The cause of the collapse is still being investigated. Reports indicate that the building had been vacant for some time, and some of the interior elements may have been failing.
A nearby dental office was evacuated as a precaution. So far no injuries have been reported.
The incident has closed Highway 45 going through Antigo. The State Patrol has routed traffic to County Road HH and State Highway 64 while crews continue their work.
