(WAOW-WSAU)– When kids are struggling in school, they usually turn to their guidance counselors. Now lawmakers are allowing therapists to work in schools as an additional resource for students, helping aid their mental health.
Assembly Bill 251, also known as 2023 Wisconsin Act 196, was signed into law allowing marriage and family therapists in schools.
“In many ways, the school therapist could serve as a resource to help prevent destructive behavior in kids”, said Linda Larson Schlitz, owner of Linda Larson Schlitz Counseling & Life Coaching.
“91% of the school shooting perpetrators were kids from broken homes,” said Schlitz. “If they could have gotten early intervention, and learned how to better deal with their thoughts and feelings, they may have found that shooting people was not the solution.”
