GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – Packers’ 2023 first-round pick Lukas Van Ness is expected to miss time this off-season after the team revealed on Wednesday that the pass rusher is currently undergoing treatments for a broken thumb.
According to the Packers Wire, head coach Matt LaFleur spoke about Van Ness’s injury, stating it doesn’t seem to be as serious as it could’ve been, saying, “He broke his thumb a little bit. Just the tip, though.”
At this time, Van Ness’s status for the team’s upcoming mandatory minicamp in June remains uncertain, but he’s expected to see a lot more playing time in 2024, mostly at defensive end in defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s new 4-3 defensive scheme following a promising rookie season that included four sacks and eight tackles for loss.
Van Ness will join several Packers currently missing time due to injury, including tight end Tucker Kraft, who’s working through a pectoral injury, and right tackle Zach Tom, who is also dealing with a pectoral injury. But the Packers did get some good news during Wednesday’s practice as running back Josh Jacobs returned to full-speed drills for the first time since his hamstring injury.
