For the first time in many years, the Wausau City Council will be faced with a vote to override a Mayoral Veto.
Last week Mayor Doug Diny announced that he wouldn’t sign a resolution allowing the Community Development office to field proposals for consultants looking to help plan the future of the north riverfront area.
Diny has previously told WSAU that he knows a development plan for the area is needed, but he questions the timing. He says he would rather get a handle on other costs such as demolishing the former drinking water plant, cleaning up the Wausau Chemical site, and parking at Athletic Park should take priority.
He also cited the impact of the recent city-wide revaluation on next year’s tax bills and the current inventory of developable land as reasons for the veto.
The override requires eight votes from the Alders. It originally passed 7-4, meaning one no vote would need to flip to a yes. It’s also possible that one of the original yes votes could flip their vote out of respect for the Mayor’s veto power.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30 at Wausau City Hall. Public comment is part of the agenda.
It’s believed that this is the first veto vote since Jim Tipple was Mayor. No vetoes occurred under previous Mayors Katie Rosenberg and Robert Mielke.
