STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – People who come to downtown Stevens Point know the mural outside Buffy’s Lampoon very well, but many are now fighting for its future after some announced work might mean it has to come down.
It all started when Kimberly Mozuch, owner of Buffy’s Lampoon, wanted to build a room to honor her late husband.
When filing for permits she noticed problems with the brick wall. The paint used at the time the mural went up sealed off the bricks trapping moisture inside them causing cracks and other damage. Mozuch says the necessary repairs would likely destroy the mural.
“These are all really old buildings and I think it’s better to find out if it’s structurally sound before it falls down like the ones I’m seeing on TV. I don’t want anyone to get hurt,” said Mozuch.
Many community members are confused and upset about the possibility of the mural being taken down. Other residents don’t like it, but acknowledge why it might be done.
Residents can comment at the next Historic Preservation Commission Meeting on June 26th.
