WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Downtown Wausau will be overrun with artists and airplanes this weekend.
Wausau Events will host the third annual Wings Over Wausau airshow beginning Friday at the Downtown Airport, while artists are setting up to decorate the sidewalks in the 400 Block with chalk art on Saturday.
Executive Director Alissandra Aderholdt says for a group specializing in large-scale events, even this weekend tests them to their limit. “[Wings Over Wausau] is still new. It’s only in its third year, but it is an event that we are looking to keep around for a while.”
Gates at the Downtown Airport will open at 5:00 PM Friday before the first airshow at 6:00. Aderholdt says that gives families a chance to get to the grounds and grab food from one of the vendors before taking in the show.
Wausau Events will also host the Wings Over Wausau 5K on Saturday before gates open for day two of the event at 11 AM. The lineup includes kid’s inflatables, a petting zoo, pilot meet-and-greet, and plane displays before two additional airshows at 4 PM and 9:30 PM. There will also be drone and radio-controlled airplane demonstrations.
Entry is $5 per person with children 12 and under admitted free. Both cash and cards will be accepted. Those paying with cards should note that an additional processing fee will be added to all transactions.
Cards will also be accepted at the beverage tent, and most vendors will accept them as well.
Shuttles will run from the 400 Block to the airport throughout Saturday, meaning attendees can park in downtown and take in both Wings Over Wausau and Chalkfest. Artists will get one square on the sidewalk to decorate starting Saturday morning and running through Sunday afternoon. Chalfest judging begins at 1:00 PM Sunday, with awards scheduled for 4:00.
