STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) A K-9 fundraiser in Portage County had many in awe at how impressive the dogs are.
The dogs got to show off their skills using bite suits, searches, and tennis balls.
The event was hosted by PuroClean in Stevens Point, which also gave the Sheriff’s Department a donation.
Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas says the dogs are a crucial part of their operation, but also expensive. “Last two years we got two new K9 units, and our K9 units alone, just the dog’s training costs about $16,000 for each dog,” he says. “So, in the last two years our funds were depleted, because we had to get some new K9’s so we’re building that fund back up for all the vet bills, for all the car equipment that you can see in the background.”
Sheriff Lukas also says dogs are helpful in finding missing people. Just last week a K-9 was able to find a missing person with Alzheimer’s in under 10 minutes.
