SHAWANO, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Highway 29 in Shawano County was closed for four hours overnight due to a threat of explosives in a vehicle and camper, according to a Shawano County Sheriff’s Office announcement issued early Thursday.
The incident happened at 12:30 on Thursday morning when officers responded to a call from a semi-driver who reported seeing a vehicle and camper on the side of the road, and the driver seemed to hurl a folding truck at the semi.
When police officers arrived, they discovered a man wielding an axe who fled to a nearby property and climbed to the top of a grain silo.
From there, he threatened deputies with explosives and other weapons in his truck and camper. This resulted in the closure of Highway 29 between Hwy 45 and Co. Rd. J.
After two hours of speaking with deputies, the man finally agreed to come down. He was arrested with no other issues. Marathon and Brown County bomb squads were dispatched due to the threats. They found the truck and camper to be safe.
The arrested man was transferred to a neighboring hospital for evaluation, where he was also placed under a protective order. Because of the hold, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office is unable to identify the man.
