IRMA, WI (WSAU) — A second teen has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of an officer at Lincoln Hills youth prison.
Rian Nyblom is facing charges for being a party to the crime of battery by prisoners and felony murder, according to a news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators say the 17-year-old may have given Javarius Hurd a cup of soap, which he threw in the face of a female correction officer before allegedly beating her. He then walked away but was chased outside by 49-year-old Corey Proulx, who tried to restrain Hurd. The 16-year-old is accused of beating him, causing Proulx to fall and hit his head on a hard surface.
Proulx was rushed from the scene but later declared brain dead at the hospital.
Hurd is believed to have planned the attack because he thought the female officer, who was treated and released from a hospital, was unfair to him. He is held in the Lincoln County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond. Nyblom is jailed on a $20,000 bond.
Despite Hurd’s age, he is being treated as an adult. Court officials will hold a telephone scheduling conference in his case on July 3rd.
Further court action for Nyblom is scheduled for July 11th.
