MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A big announcement highlights the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee as former President Donald Trump announces his running mate.
Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio will be Trump’s running mate on the Republican ticket this fall.
The assassination attempt on Trump dominated the conversation at the convention as delegates arrived and Monday morning as they had their first official gatherings. However, conversation turned to Vance in the afternoon as the Vance selection became official.
“I think it’s a great pick for the Midwest,” said former Gov. Scott Walker, a 2024 RNC delegate for Wisconsin. “It’s somebody who understands us in the Big Ten area here.”
The 41 delegates for Wisconsin and 38 alternates started their day with a breakfast at their hotel near Fiserv Forum. They will do that each morning of the four-day convention.
Monday afternoon, the delegates were on the floor of the convention for the first time. That is where most heard about Vance being announced as the VP candidate.
“I just think JD Vance is not only a U.S. Senator, but he’s got such a compelling human story to him,” said Walker. “His family of course he wrote about in his book, suffering from addiction and it’s something that plagues people not only in Wisconsin, but all across this country and I think it makes it very real.”
Demonstrators were already making their presence known in Milwaukee as the conversation turned to Trump’s running mate.
More than 100 different organizations registered with the City of Milwaukee as demonstration groups.
“I think he’s a sniveling accommodator,” said Sarah Freeman, a demonstrator from Milwaukee on J.D. Vance. “He came in on one voice and he had this Hillbilly Elegy and really I read it. It was very moving, but he’s just come sliding in. He’s a snake.”
